Warriors Battle To Draw Against 17th-Ranked UW-Platteville

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team began its 2013 season by battling to a 1-1 double overtime draw against 17th-ranked UW-Platteville Friday night at Warrior Field.

Despite being out-shot 9-0 in the opening stanza, Wisconsin Lutheran kept visiting UW-Platteville off the scoreboard with some sound defense. The contest remained scoreless until the 68th minute of the second half when UWP's Mbodje Sarr netted an unassisted score for the 1-0 lead. The Warriors didn't trail for much longer however as sophomore Matt Schmidt (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) found the back of the net unassisted off a loose ball from after a corner kick. Senior goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) made five second-half saves as the game was sent two extra sessions.

The Pioneers continued to bring pressure as they combined to out-shoot WLC 8-2 over the final two 10-minute overtime periods, but the Warriors continued to play hard and preserve the tie against one of the NCAA's Sweet 16-qualifying teams from a season ago.

Sophomore Austin Drake (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) tallied a team-high four shots as the Warriors finished with six for the game. Stewart was terrific in net as he saved 10 shots.

For Platteville (0-0-1), Cameron Weess led the team with five shots and keeper Ian Christensen made four saves.

The Warriors (0-0-1) remain home at Warrior Field Sunday when they host Ripon (0-0-0) in a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
