WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College's Kendra Schumacher (Little Chute, Wis.) will compete for a national title on Saturday after posting the fastest time in the 200m preliminaries on Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at JDL Fast Track.
Running out of lane six in heat one of five in the 200m preliminaries, Schumacher won her heat and posted the fastest qualifying time among the event's 20 entries of 24.88 seconds. The mark was just .04 seconds off her own conference- and school-record mark that she set last Saturday at the Ripon NCAA Final Qualifier & Multi. Schumacher will vie for the program's first-ever All-American honor tomorrow when she competes in the 200m final at 3:10 p.m. CST.
"I have to hand it to Kendra," said third-year head coach Eric Kramer. "After missing finals last year by one spot in the 100m and 200m, I wasn't sure how she'd respond after a rough 60m prelim race. She came off the track and right away got to work preparing for the 200m. She had a confidence about her. She got out aggressive and had a great close to finish well. We're so excited for her to go into tomorrow as the No. 1 seed."
Schumacher also competed in the 60m preliminaries earlier in the day, where she finished 18th overall with a time of 7.81 seconds.
